PickleBallFix:June12 ,2020

Hi Picklers,

Time flies when you’re having fun playing pickleball, and it's hard to believe June is half over already. The COVID-19 Task Force meets again this Monday, June 15, and we’re hoping that Phase 2 will be starting. The Pickleball Club has sent the Task Force requests to consider so that we can get back to playing normally again very soon. The BOD holds its workshop on June 17 and will review the Task Force recommendations and we're anticipating they will make some changes at that time. You can watch the Workshop on Channel 732 and information will be on the TP website. Any changes implemented will be sent out from the Club via Den and placed on the TPPC website.

General Manager Search Committee Update

The Pickleball Club is well represented on the search committee for the new General Manager with two of the seven TP members to include our TPPC president Marie Knowlton and Bob Freed, manager of our TPPC Sunday evening shootouts. The Search Committee has already met and begun working with the firm Kopplin, Kuebler & Wallace, an experienced professional executive search company. The process should take 60-90 days.

Court 4

As mentioned in last week's "Fix," this Monday, June 8 saw some changes in the weekly schedule on the Den Sign-up Sheet. Three (3) of the courts are now listed as Courts 1,2,3 and the remaining court is listed as Beginner/Novice: Court 4, focused on helping beginner/novice players. This week several experienced players as mentors signed up on Court 4, and a few novice players joined them. Here are some comments from our newer players.

"I love knowing that the one court (4) is for novice players. I’ve always been apprehensive about signing up to play as a novice player, but this is a game changer for me! Plus having a mentor there was an added bonus!! Steve, Jack & Marie were so kind, fun and helpful!"

When asked whether this player would recommend this format to other new players, she replied, "Yes, I would absolutely encourage other novice players to sign up. I felt 100% comfortable. I can imagine after getting to know some other players, we novices would start scheduling court time on our own." She added, "I think having a mentor available during those time slots is fantastic, and would encourage others to sign up as well. It's almost better than the Skills & Drills for those that know PB basics."

Another novice player on Court 4 commented: "I have played on the novice court for two days this week. It worked out very well. Monday, Steve played with 3 novice players and, of course, last night Marie and Jack played with 2 of us. I think it would be helpful for a mentor to sign up first, maybe just evenings for now. Then as people join, more times can be added." She also suggested having 2 mentors and 2 novices. "I think 2 mentors/2 novices gives novices a better feel for the game and may be more fun for the mentors too!"

Let's all encourage less experienced players to sign up and come out to play.

Note: Make sure when signing up on the Den that you check Court 4 (not entries that say Courts 1,2,3) in the time slot you want: Open Play (Beginner/Novice Court: Court 4) Lodge Courts

From Marie Knowlton: Looking for a volunteer…

I would like/need someone to create the Pickleball Club current history for future years. Ten years after TPPC was founded 12 courts have begun to emerge. Plans are available, a timeline has been created, land is being cleared, traffic is obstructed and we are actively cheering for the progress to continue. These are important times for this Club and this community. With restrictions because of COVID-19, some of us may be less busy than usual so now would be a good time to get started on this project. Please contact me, Marie Knowlton at lilykn@me.com. Let’s capture this memory!

More Pickleball Instruction

Pickleball Magazine in the June issue at https://view.joomag.com/pickleball-magazine-5-3- wd/0268370001591313355?short& contains interesting articles starting on page 36 discussing instructional features, such as fine-tuning the serve, third shot drop, the volley, dinking strategies, successful lobbing and more. To follow up your reading, the Pickleball Channel at http://www.pickleballchannel.com/pickleball-tips has numerous videos with tips that show players demonstrating many of these skills.

Although it's been quite hot playing, join with your pickleball friends, meet new members, help out as mentors on Court 4 and encourage new players and those who want to improve their skills. The TPPC is also looking into holding a training clinic with a well-known pickleball pro instructor in January on the new courts! Watch for more news.

We’re looking forward to more responses from the Task Force. Be safe and come play pickleball! Marie Knowlton, TPPCP
