PickleBall Fix: August 13, 2021
Despite the heat the courts have been filled at prime times—early morning, especially 9-11 and evenings. Unfortunately, rain cancelled evening play for Donny’s Wednesday ABCD from 6-8pm and Thursday Ladies’ Night 6-8pm. It’s so great to see so many of our newer players filling the courts regularly and also playing in the Paddle Up events in the morning enabling members to play with many different players.
COOKOUTS. Chef Gino served sandwiches to more than 30 members last Saturday complemented with dishes members contributed. Some were so well received that recipes were exchanged too. Tom Asbel presented an insulated water jug customized by Barb Rooks and a paddle cover to the raffle winner Bonnie Schmink. With hopefully no rain, this week Gino has planned a smorgasbord of lasagna, peppers/sausage, and fried fish. Join the group at this Saturday night cookout with already 50 signed up.
UPCOMING BOARD PROJECTS. Your TPPC Board is working on several projects of interest.
--PARC Opening Ceremonies and events. An afternoon of ongoing demonstrations will introduce pickleball to residents and include a tournament for members coupled with food/drink, and much more. Volunteers will be needed to help out so contact Chairs Helen DeGirolamo and Cathi Ellingson at tppcvolunteers@gmail.com to put your name on their list.
--TPPC Bash. Cathi Ellingson, Bash Coordinator, announced the Annual TPPC Bash has been set for March 11, 2022 at the Lodge. This is the big TPPC social event of the year, an evening with dinner/drink, entertainment/dancing. Chef Gino, Helen DeGirolamo and Pam Asbel are the organizers and will also need volunteers to help. Keep the date open for a fun time!
--TP 40th Anniversary. The TPPC will be participating in the Timber Pines 40th anniversary celebration with a tournament, intro to pickleball to non-players including Hernando County officials. Ideas for the celebration are welcome, and volunteers will be needed for the occasion.
FYI: Suggestions or questions can also be placed in the Pickleball Box at the PARC. The box is checked every day.
AUGUST SCHEDULE FEEDBACK. August is about half over and players have had the opportunity to try some of the new events that have been included. Next Paddle Up has become quite popular so much so that the number of courts has been expanded.
--Courts 1,3 and 4 will be identified as Next Paddle Up courts from 9 to 11 on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday through the rest of August. Three courts will accommodate 18-20 players for this event. The Next Paddle Up paddle holders should be located at one specific spot for this event.
--If additional courts are needed on Wednesday, players may use any available court.
--As more players want to play Next Paddle Up, we will expand the event in Den for more court sign-ups. NOTE: Players should play on courts identified/assigned for their event in The Den and not randomly assume to play on another court that other players may have already signed up for.
SEPTEMBER SCHEDULE PLANNING. As planning for the September schedule starts, we’d like to have some feedback on some of the new events:
--Open play by skill level (A B C D) or (All Levels) - limited to 6 players
--Paddle Up by skill level (A B C D) limited to 6 players; others unlimited

“HOW TO FALL” TECHNIQUES. There have been a few falls on the courts recently, and while we cannot always prevent a fall when we are playing pickleball, we can consider ways to fall safely. Thanks to Bill Kilcoyne for the following links with tips on how to fall safely. Check https://www.aarp.org/health/conditions-treatments/info- 2017/how-to-fall-safely.html and https://www.grayingwithgrace.com/safe-falling-techniques-for-elderly/. Players may fall eventually, but if you learn to fall safely, you may come away with only a bruise or two.
Join the fun playing and meeting many new colleagues on the new PARC courts. See you at the Saturday night cookout! PLEASE BRING CORRECT CHANGE!
